Why supplement the NHS

The NHS is under pressure. Your family does not have to wait.

NHS waiting times for specialist appointments and diagnostics continue to rise. Private medical insurance gives your family rapid access to the care you need, without replacing your NHS entitlement.

Many families find they only need private care once or twice a year, but the speed and convenience when they do need it is transformative.

NHS waiting times affect your family's wellbeing

With over 7.6 million people on NHS waiting lists, access to timely specialist care is increasingly difficult. Private medical insurance means your family is seen quickly when it matters most.

Private health costs are rising

The cost of private consultations, diagnostics and surgery has risen sharply. A private medical insurance policy spreads these costs and protects your family from unexpected bills.

Mental health support is often excluded from NHS

Many private medical insurance policies now include mental health cover, including therapy and psychiatric care, which can be extremely difficult to access quickly through the NHS.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Do I need private health insurance in the UK?+

You are not required to have it. The NHS provides free care at the point of use. However, private health insurance gives your family faster access to consultants, specialists and diagnostics, typically within days rather than months. It is particularly valuable if you are self-employed, have children, or have a pre-existing condition that might benefit from faster specialist review.

What does private health insurance cover?+

Most policies cover private specialist consultations, in-patient and day-patient hospital treatment, diagnostic tests such as MRI and blood tests, and surgery. Many now also include mental health cover, physiotherapy and cancer care. What is covered varies significantly between policies and insurers, which is why comparing with an adviser is important.

What is typically not covered by private medical insurance?+

Most policies do not cover pre-existing conditions (conditions you had before the policy started), routine GP visits, cosmetic procedures, dental or optical care (unless specifically added), pregnancy and fertility treatment, or chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma (ongoing management). Your adviser will explain the exclusions clearly before you commit to any policy.

How much does private health insurance cost for a family?+

Costs depend on the ages and health of everyone covered, the level of cover you choose and whether you add extras such as dental or optical. A family of four can typically expect to pay between £100 and £300 per month for a mid-level policy. Your adviser will find the most competitive quote for your specific family circumstances.

Can I get private health insurance if I have a pre-existing condition?+

Yes, but the pre-existing condition is typically excluded from cover, at least initially. Some insurers offer moratorium underwriting, which means the condition may be covered after a set period without symptoms or treatment. A specialist adviser will know which insurers are most likely to offer you the best terms.
